The Frangenberg Donation

Standard Edition: ISBN 978-1-9993285-4-2

Paperback / softback 174pp, h297mm x w210mm, 51 colour illustrations, text by Phillip Lindley.

In 2018, Andreas and Rita Frangenberg donated to Wolfson College, Cambridge, the bulk of the huge art collection accumulated by the late Dr Thomas Frangenberg (1957-2018). This brought to the college a fine collection of ideas-based art which Thomas had acquired over nearly four decades.

In 2020, Phillip Lindley curated a personal selection from the collection in Wolfson’s Combination Room and published an account of Thomas as a collector: Angle of Vision

This book is beautifully illustrated, and with a wide-ranging essay (both scholarly and very personal) by Phillip Lindley, Excellence 100 Professor of Art History at Loughborough University, and formerly Frangenberg’s colleague at Leicester University. The collection consists of conceptual art made in London from the mid-1970s to 2017. Turner-Prize winners and nominees as well as other internationally celebrated artists are represented.

The standard edition is available direct from the author for £40 (order a copy below).

Artists’ Edition (no ISBN)

Now (July 2024), at the initial prompting of one of the artists, we are publishing a newly cased and corrected version of the book, in an edition of 50, with a selection of nine art-works, each also in a limited edition of 50, by artists whose work Thomas collected.  Each artist has produced an entirely new piece, or a new version of an existing work, for this edition. The edition will be produced in two phases: a first batch of 25, only four of which are for sale, at £500 each numbered edition. Then a second batch when the first has been sold.

Each catalogue has been individually numbered by the author out of 50.

The art works:

Tim Head, print on Canson Infinity paper*

Nicky Hirst, individual hand-made work of art, each unique

Amikam Toren, photocopy

Alicja Dobrucka, individually hand-printed photographic print

Simon Patterson, folded Innova print with grockled edge*

Janette Parris, print on Canson Infinity paper*

Hannnah Lister, photographic print on Canson Infinity paper*

Keith Milow, print on Canson Infinity paper*

Stuart Taylor, individual hand-made work of art using 35 mm slides, each one different, made from Thomas’s slides

Box designed by Lulu Ao

*All printed in the Studio of Light at Loughborough University

All but the box are individually signed on front or back and individually numbered by the artist out of 50: thus 1/50 etc.

Each artist has written, or agreed with the author, a short explanatory text about the work they have made.

The box to hold the works was designed by the Chinese text artist Lulu Ao whom Thomas did not know, but whose work would have appealed to him. The box itself constitutes a tenth work of art.

Angle of Vision standard edition is available direct from the author for £40 (includes UK postage).
