The catalogue of an exhibition in the Sir Robert Martin gallery, Loughborough University, in February 2023, with an essay and commentary by Phillip Lindley.
Lindley examines three sets of works by Toren in which the artist destroys or mutilates other artists’ representational oil- paintings in order to make his own art works. Toren’s Armchair Paintings are the most well-known of these series. For them, the artist cuts words or phrases out of the paintings. Lindley finally considers another series, the Narrative Paintings, in which Toren reuses the letters excised from the Armchair Paintings to form texts recounting dreams.
